The assessment test links provided below and the column at left are sample tests developed by the New York State Education Department for elementary, intermediate, and high school grade levels. Level 1 represents Elementary School level, Level 2 Middle School and Level 3 High School. All tests require Adobe Reader and it may take several seconds to download. It is recommended that you save and print out tests to work off line. If you are working in our computer lab, ask at the desk for assistance to print out a practice test. Tests with voice narrations require that QuickTime is installed. For additional assessment tests and other information check the column at left.
LEVEL 1 - LANGUAGE SKILLS

Book 1- In this section, you read about two adventurous frogs and answer multiple choice questions. You also answer questions about five more reading assignments: an article about bears, a poem about trees, a letter to a school newspaper, an article about the Appalachian Trail, and the story about Astronaut. Mae Jemison.

Book 2 Listening - Listen to a story called “Waldo’s Up and Down Day.” You can take notes to use to answer test questions. ( It takes several seconds for sound file to download. If unable to load sound, click here to read.)

Book 2 Writing- In this section will answer some questions about the story you just listened to and write your own short story about making a new friend. You will also read two articles about birds, answers questions and write a short essay.

LEVEL 1 - SOCIAL STUDIES

Book 1 - This book has 2 parts. Part I has 35 questions covering geography and history. In Part II you write answers to 12 questions based on timelines.

Book 2 - This book contains Part III, with several documents relating to westward expansion with building of the Erie Canal followed by the railroads. You will answer questions about several documents and then write a short essay based on your answers about the different reasons that railroads replaced canals as the most popular method of transportation document.

LEVEL 1 - SCIENCE SKILLS

Book 1 - In Part I you will answer 30 multiple choice questions covering basic science topics. In Part II there five illustrations of science problems, each with two questions requiring written answers.

LEVEL 1 - MATH SKILLS

Book 1 - This book contains 30 multiple choice questions covering basic arithmetic, measurements and shapes,
Tools - This is a page of tools that can be printed and cut out to use with the tests.

Book 2 - In this book there are 15 problems that relate to charts, graphs and the area and perimeter of shapes.

LEVEL 3 - SKILLS

ENGLISH
Session 1 Listening - Listen to an account about vaudeville, a type of theatrical entertainment popular in the late 1890s and early1900s. Then take a multiple-choice test. Session 1 Test- Part A tests your listening skills; answer all six multiple-choice questions and write a response, as directed. For Part B, answer all ten multiple-choice questions and write a response, as directed.

Session 2 - Read passages from a memoir and a poem. Then answer multiple-choice questions. Next write an essay about the nature of work as revealed in the passages.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Global History and Geography - Part I contains 50 multiple-choice questions. Part II and III contain several documents, followed by one or more essay question.

U.S. History and Government - Part I contains 50 multiple-choice questions. Part II and III contain several documents, followed by one or more essay questions.

MATH
Math A - This tests consists of 39 questions. There are 30 multiple-choice questions in Part I. For the remaining questions all steps and work must be shown.

Math B -This examination has four parts, with a total of 34 questions. Part I multiple-choice; Parts II, III, and IV indicate the necessary steps,including appropriate formula substitutions, diagrams, graphs, charts, etc. The formulas that you may need to answer some questions in this examination are found on page 23.

Book 2 Writing- In the first part of this book, you are going to provide written answers to questions about the story you just listened to and write a short essay using your notes. In the next part, you are going to read two articles about the wives of Presidents and then write a short essay based on what you read.

LEVEL 2 - SOCIAL STUDIES SKILLS

Book 1 - This test has 45 multiple choice questions covering the Pre-Civil War period of American history, followed by short questions requiring written answers.

Book 2 - This section asks questions related to the struggle for women’s rights in the United States. You also will write an essay in discussing two ways women historically have not had the same rights as men and identify and discuss two individuals, groups, and/or events that have helped women in their struggle for equal rights.

LEVEL 2 - SCIENCE SKILLS

Book 1 -In Part I you will answer 45 multiple choice questions covering basic science topics. In Part II there are 13 problems presented for which you are asked to describe scientific principles in written answers.

LEVEL 2 - MATH SKILLS

Book 1 - This book contains 27 multiple choice problems that include fractions, geometry, pre-algebra and word problems.

Book 2 - In this book there are 18 problems covering geometry, pre-algebra and critical thinking word problems that require solutions and written explanations of how you arrived at answers.
